Readers Bookshop calls on talented young writers to participate in second annual Readers Prize for Gifted Young Writers

Amman, Jordan – September 2015 – Readers Bookshop recently announced the launch of the second annual Readers Prize for Gifted Young Writers, a competition that aims to encourage the next generation of literary talents by providing young writers with a platform for showcasing their creativity.

The return of the Readers Prize for Gifted Young Writers builds on the success last year’s inaugural competition, which enjoyed exceptional participation and highlighted the incredible talents of local youth. The competition itself stems from Readers’ commitment to strengthening Jordan’s literary scene, encouraging creativity as well as literacy among the Kingdom’s young people.

The Readers Prize for Gifted Young Writers is a short story competition open to young writers between the ages of 13 and 17. Participants must submit an original, unpublished work, written in either English or Arabic. There are no theme or subject restrictions on the stories, encouraging participants to let their imaginations run wild. Writers who participated last year may enter the competition again this year, provided that they submit a new story. Participants can submit their stories to Readers Bookshop via email, at, or in person at either of its branches, which are located at TAJ Lifestyle’s Market Level and at the Cozmo Centre at 7th Circle. The deadline for submissions is November 8.
The first-place winner will receive a cash prize of JD250, in addition to a JD150 gift voucher from THE Group, which can be redeemed at any Readers, Cozmo, Hamleys or BHS location. The second-place winner will receive a cash prize of JD150 and a JD100 voucher, while the third-place winner will take home JD100 in cash, plus a JD50 voucher from THE Group.
Stories submitted to the competition will be assessed by an esteemed panel of judges. Participants will be evaluated based on a number of criteria, including creativity, grammar, spelling, and richness of vocabulary. The judging panel includes Siham Milkawi, an Arabic-language novelist and nonfiction writer; Laith Biltaji, a Jordanian poet and writer; Hatham Qaddoura, an Arabic-language novelist and nonfiction writer; Rabeea Al Nasser, the Children Libraries Consultantat the Abdul Hameed Shoman Foundation; Dalal Hammoudeh, Head of English at the Modern Montessori School; Hisham Bustani, a Jordanian author; and Katherine Ma'ali, a certified IB examiner and English teacher at Cambridge High School.
